নদীয়া জেলার শান্তিপুরে শ্যামচাঁদ পাড়ায় অবস্থিত আটচালা মন্দিরটি স্থাপত্যের এক অপরূপ নিদর্শন। লিপি অনুসারে ১৬৪৮ শক অর্থাৎ ১৭২৬ খ্রিস্টাব্দে মন্দিরটি তৈরি হয়েছিল। মন্দিরটির প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ছিলেন স্থানীয় রামগোপাল খাঁ চৌধুরী। কথিত আছে, মন্দির নির্মাণে দু লক্ষ টাকা খরচ হয়েছিল।
মন্দিরের বিগ্রহ কৃষ্ণমূর্তি কষ্টিপাথরের তৈরি। প্রথম অবস্থায় রাধার মূর্তিতে ছিল সোনার। মন্দিরের সামনে খুব বড় একটি নাটমন্দির আছে।
খিলানের নিচে পাথরের প্রতিষ্ঠা লিপিটি এই রকম ।
"শ্রীমত শ্যামচন্দ্রস্য মন্দিরং পূর্ণতাম ।
বসুবেদর্তু শুভ্রাংশুসংখ্যায়া গণিতে ছকে ১৬৪৮ ।।"
অঙ্কশ্য ও বামাগতি হিসাবে নির্নেয় সালটি এরকম
বসু ৮ , বেদ ৪, ঋতু ৬ এবং শুভ্রাংশু ১ অর্থাৎ ১৬৪৮।
মন্দিরটিতে পাঁচটি খিলান আছে। মধ্যের তিনটি খিলান দিয়ে অলিন্দে প্রবেশ করা যায়। দুপাশের খিলান দুটিতে টানা দেওয়াল গাঁথা আছে।
মন্দিরটিতে টেরাকোটা অলংকরণ খুবই সামান্য । খিলান গুলির শীর্ষ গুলিতে শিব মন্দিরের সারি এবং অন্যান্য জায়গায় কিছু পোড়ামাটির পদ্ম উৎকীর্ণ আছে। প্রায় ৭০ ফুট উঁচু আটচালা মন্দিরটি পশ্চিমবঙ্গে অবস্থিত আটচালা মন্দির গুলির মধ্যে বিরল। বিভিন্ন সময়ে সংস্কারের ফলে মন্দিরটি নবরূপ ধারণ করেছে।
The Atchala Temple, located in Shyamchand Para, Shantipur, Nadia district, is a magnificent example of architecture. According to the inscription, the temple was built in 1648 Saka, i.e. 1726 AD. The temple was founded by a local man named Ramgopal Khan Chowdhury. It is said that the temple was built at a cost of two lakh rupees.
The idol of Krishna in the temple is made of kasti stone. In the original state, the idol of Radha was made of gold. There is a very large ' Natmondir' in front of the temple.
The inscription on the stone under the arch is as follows-
Śrīmata śyāmacandrasya mandiraṁ pūrṇatāma.
Basubēdartu śubhrānśusaṅkhyāẏā gaṇitē chakē 1648.."
The year calculated according to numbers from right to left is as follows: Vasu 8, Veda 4, Ritu 6 and Shuvrangshu 1 i.e. 1648.
The temple has five arches. The atrium can be entered through the three middle arches. The two side arches have retaining walls.
The temple has very little terracotta decoration. The tops of the arches have rows of Shiva temples and some terracotta lotuses carved in other places. The Atchala temple, which is about 70 feet high, is rare among the Atchala temples in West Bengal. The temple has been renovated at various times and has taken on a new look.
