town of fifty-two markets and fifty-three lanes\u2014is the oldest urban settlement in the Medinipur district. In earlier times, each of its markets was further divided into several <em>pattis<\/em> (commercial quarters). Wealthy merchants dealing in silk, fine textiles, bell-metal, brass, gold, perfumes, and other commodities resided here.<\/p>\n<p>The silk industry, in particular, brought prosperity to many families. The District Gazetteer also mentions the flourishing silk trade of Chandrakona, Kshirpai, Kharar, Ramjibanpur, Radhanagar, and surrounding areas. Drawn by this thriving industry, Armenian, French, and English merchants established trading factories here.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving aside the foreigners, by the beginning of the nineteenth century many Chandrakona merchants had amassed sufficient wealth through trade to establish zamindaris. Numerous temples were built under their patronage. Besides Vishnu and Krishna temples, Shiva temples were also constructed in large numbers. Remarkably, this single town once had as many as six Shiva temples dedicated to <strong>Shantinath<\/strong>, two of which were built in the <em>Navaratna<\/em> (nine-towered) style.<\/p>\n<p>One of these temples was built in the Mitrasenpur area of the town. This journal, however, discusses the second temple, located in Dakshin Bazar.<\/p>\n<p>The presiding deity of this temple is popularly known as <strong>Shantinath Shiva<\/strong>. However, two other names are also heard in local tradition\u2014<strong>Buro Shiva<\/strong> (\u201cOld Shiva\u201d) and <strong>Desh Sol Ana&#8217;r Shiva<\/strong> (\u201cShiva of the Entire Community\u201d). The latter name suggests that the temple was not built by any single family or individual. Rather, it was probably constructed through a collective effort.<\/p>\n<p>In those days, wealthy residents of one <em>patti<\/em> often sought to rival the affluent people of another <em>patti<\/em> by establishing a separate temple bearing the same name. Such a custom was prevalent in Chandrakona. It is therefore assumed that this Shantinath Shiva temple was similarly built through the joint initiative of several prosperous individuals. The temple belonged to the entire community, and from this arose the name <strong>\u201cDesh Sol Ana&#8217;r Shiva\u201d<\/strong> and the corresponding temple.<\/p>\n<p>The east-facing brick temple is built in the <strong>Navaratna<\/strong> style. In front is a three-arched porch with three entrances. The upper-storey porch contains one open doorway and two false (decorative) doorways. The sanctum (<em>garbhagriha<\/em>) has a single entrance.<\/p>\n<p>The upper five towers are square in plan. The <em>bara<\/em> and <em>gandi<\/em> sections are articulated with <em>ratha<\/em> projections, while the <em>gandi<\/em> is divided into <em>pidha<\/em> tiers. The cornices are straight. However, the four tower bases situated at the corners of the first storey are octagonal in form, including their pedestal, <em>bara<\/em>, and <em>gandi<\/em> sections. These lack <em>ratha<\/em> projections, and their cornices are curved.<\/p>\n<p>The crowning portions of all nine towers are elegantly designed. A staircase leads up to the third storey of the temple. In front of the temple stands a sixteen-doored <em>natmandir<\/em> (festival hall), roofed with corrugated metal sheets.<\/p>\n<p>A few notable decorative features may be mentioned:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>On the front wall of the porch, across three cornice levels and on the corner projections on both sides\u2014forming a total of five rows\u2014numerous full-figure sculptures have been created. However, repeated coats of paint have obscured much of their artistic detail.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>On either side of the sanctum entrance stand two <em>dvarapala<\/em> (guardian) figures depicted as ascetics with matted locks and loincloths. Each holds two snakes in his hands. At first glance, they can easily be mistaken for representations of Shiva himself.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, the upper-storey porch contains two false doorways.
