Ramkumar sat working on the veranda of the inner house. Crafting brass and bell-metal utensils was a tradition passed down through generations in his family. His father, Titucharan, had practiced the craft, as had his grandfather before him. The rhythmic clang of hammer strikes echoed through the air.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, Ramkumar heard a strange sound\u2014<em>&#8220;hum-na, hum-na&#8221;<\/em>\u2014approaching from a distance. The noise seemed to stop at the front entrance of the house. Who could be arriving in a palanquin at this hour?<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, a palanquin had come to a halt at the doorstep of the Karmakar household. A young maiden stepped out, pushing aside the palanquin curtain. Turning to the bearers, she said, \u201cMy father is working inside. Go to him and collect your payment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What a sweet voice the girl had! It was like a cascade of music flowing through the air. And her beauty\u2014when she emerged from the palanquin, it was as if a flood of light spread all around in an instant. Her anklets tinkling melodiously, she walked into the house.<\/p>\n<p>The chief palanquin bearer entered and asked Ramkumar for the fare. Ramkumar was astonished. He had no daughter\u2014so where had this girl come from? But why would the bearers believe him? They had carried her all the way from the riverbank. Could he simply claim that no such girl existed?<\/p>\n<p>At last, Ramkumar said, \u201cCome, let us see who has entered my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But where was she? A thorough search was made inside, yet no stranger had entered the house. The palanquin still stood in the courtyard, and the bearers were still sweating from their journey. Someone had certainly arrived. Meanwhile, a sweet fragrance lingered in the air.<\/p>\n<p>The wise Ramkumar needed no further clues. He fell prostrate at the threshold and cried out in deep emotion:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMother, you have graciously come to your son\u2019s home. Such a blessing I could never have imagined, not even in my dreams through seven lifetimes. How fortunate I am! Since you have come, stay here forever, Mother. Remain here eternally, unmoving and steadfast.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the legend traditionally told as the source of the Karmakar family\u2019s prosperity. Ramkumar installed an idol of Goddess Lakshmi and began worshipping her. From that time onward, Lakshmi was believed to have established her permanent seat in the household. Through the Goddess\u2019s blessings, Ramkumar\u2019s earnings increased greatly.<\/p>\n<p>With this wealth, he acquired several revenue villages (<em>mouzas<\/em>) in the Sutahata and Moyna areas and established a modest zamindari estate. He built a grand mansion for his family. At that time, a wave of Vaishnavism was sweeping across the district, and several Vishnu temples had already been established in Tamluk. Ramkumar, too, embraced the Vaishnava faith.<\/p>\n<p>When Ramkumar Karmakar first arrived in Tamluk, he had found shelter with an elderly woman known as \u201cShyama Kamarini.\u201d She lived near the site of the present-day Kalika Ashram. The old woman worshipped a sacred Shaligram stone daily, referring to it as \u201cRaghunath.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the grace of Goddess Lakshmi, Ramkumar prospered and established his own estate. In front of his mansion, he built a Navaratna (nine-towered) temple. He adopted the sacred Narayan stone worshipped by the old woman as \u201cRaghunath\u201d as the family deity and installed it in the temple. The family also abandoned the surname \u201cKarmakar\u201d and adopted the surname \u201cDas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Durga Puja is also celebrated in the household. It is said that Shyama Kamarini had a little daughter named Durga, who died at a very young age. Later, Ramkumar introduced Durga Puja into his family tradition. However, in memory of the prematurely deceased child Durga, the family\u2019s Durga Puja does not include the ritual of <em>Kumari Puja<\/em> (the worship of a young girl), a practice that continues to this day.<\/p>\n<p>The Raghunath Temple, built of brick, faces west, although it also has an entrance on the north side. The temple stands on a high plinth. Verandas encircle the sanctum on all four sides, each featuring three arched entrances. The walls of the sanctum are quite tall, giving the temple a graceful and upright appearance.<\/p>\n<p>The temple is built in the <em>Pancha-Ratna<\/em> (five-towered) style. The towers are constructed in the <em>Shikhara<\/em> style, each featuring a tri-ratha architectural arrangement. The upper portions are divided into stepped <em>pida<\/em>-style sections. The shrine was an exceptionally handsome structure and was once regarded as an ornament of the town of Tamluk.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, however, the number of hereditary custodians increased, and the family became divided into separate households. Neglect gradually set in, and with it came the temple\u2019s decline.<\/p>\n<p>The temple was built in the late nineteenth century. Today, it stands on the verge of complete ruin. What was once a source of pride for the town now lies in decay, yet few seem to pay attention to its condition.<\/p>\n<p>It is also said that, to commemorate the auspicious appearance of Goddess Lakshmi in the family, a temple was built in the Sutanuti area of Moyna, where deities named <strong>Radha-Govinda<\/strong> were installed.
